Understanding Liver Function

The liver's remarkable regenerative capacity is one of its most impressive features. It is the only human organ that can regrow to its original size even after losing up to 75% of its tissue. However, this regenerative ability depends on the liver being otherwise healthy. Chronic damage from disease, alcohol abuse, or toxin exposure can overwhelm the liver's natural defenses and lead to irreversible scarring called cirrhosis.
