Located between the airport and the Souq on the Corniche, the National Museum of Qatar is hard to miss. The building itself is designed to resemble a desert rose crystal — a series of interlocking disc-shaped forms in pale stone. From certain angles it looks almost organic, like something that grew rather than was built.

Inside, the permanent collection tells the complete story of Qatar from the formation of the Arabian Peninsula through to the present day. The galleries are arranged chronologically and include geological formations, pearl diving culture, Bedouin life, the discovery of oil, and Qatar's rapid modernisation.

It is free to enter. The building is 15 minutes from the airport on the route into the city, making it an ideal stop on the way back before your flight.
