Dalton Highway, Alaska
Stretching 666 kilometers from Fairbanks to the Arctic oil fields, the James Dalton Highway is remote to the point of isolation, with only a handful of fuel stops and almost no cell coverage. Winter temperatures can plunge to -50°C, icing over the gravel surface, while summer rain turns long stretches into mud. The road's unwritten rule, drivers say, is simple: get out of the way of the big rigs, because they won't stop for you.
