North Yungas Road, Bolivia โ "Death Road"
Bolivia's North Yungas Road descends roughly 3,600 meters from the Andes into the Amazon basin over just 64 kilometers, with drop-offs reaching 600 meters and almost no guardrails along the way. Before a safer bypass highway opened nearby, the road was estimated to claim between 200 and 300 lives every year, mostly due to fog, rain, and its narrow, twisting gravel surface. Since a paved bypass opened in 2006, most commercial traffic has moved off the old road, which is now better known as a bucket-list mountain biking route ย though local traffic still uses it, and fatalities continue.
