Beijing, September 14, 2026 :ย China has introduced two artificial intelligence-powered systems designed to enhance geological mapping and mineral exploration, marking a move toward more accurate, comprehensive, and efficient methods of analyzing geological data and identifying potential mineral resources.
The China Geological Survey unveiled the systems, AI-OreSeeking and AI-GeoMapping, at the 28th China Mining Conference and Exhibition in Tianjin. The development comes as China seeks to strengthen the exploration and supply of critical minerals.
Geological mapping provides essential information about the underground environment by identifying the distribution of geological layers, structures, and rock formations, helping researchers determine areas that may contain mineral deposits.
Li Fengdan, an official at the China Geological Survey responsible for AI-GeoMapping, said the system represents an important advancement in the identification of geological indicators and the selection of potential exploration targets.
After a decade of development, AI-GeoMapping has evolved from basic AI algorithms and specialized software into an integrated system covering multiple stages of the geological mapping process.
The system is designed to address challenges traditionally faced during fieldwork, including difficult terrain and limited exposure of rock formations in areas such as swamps and deserts. According to the official, it can identify geological bodies with an overall accuracy of more than 90 percent.
The AI-based system also improves the processing, analysis, and compilation of geological data. By combining satellite imagery and airborne geophysical surveys with field observations, it can more than double data-processing efficiency compared with traditional methods.
The new systems are expected to support more efficient geological surveys and improve the identification of potential mineral resources through the integration of AI-driven analysis with conventional geological data.
