Doha, October 25, 2026 : Doha hosted the 50th Congress of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Saturday, bringing together representatives of national associations to discuss the sport’s governance, development and future priorities.
Addressing the gathering, HE Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain welcomed the delegates and described the milestone edition as a reflection of the leadership, collaboration and shared vision that have helped expand hockey’s global presence.
He stressed the importance of building on this progress by creating more opportunities for future generations, noting that sporting success should be measured not only by the events held but also by their lasting benefits for athletes and young people.
Al Buenain added that Qatar’s role in hosting international sporting events extends beyond welcoming participants, helping establish lasting partnerships and creating a positive impact that continues beyond the events themselves. He also highlighted the need for cooperation among international federations, national Olympic committees and other stakeholders, with athletes remaining central to decision-making.
FIH President Tayyab Ikram thanked Qatar and the QOC for hosting the Congress, recognising the support of HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and President of the Olympic Council of Asia Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani for hockey and the international gathering in Doha.
Ikram praised Qatar’s contribution to bringing the global sporting community together and promoting peace and mutual understanding through sport, particularly amid regional and international challenges.
He said the Congress provided a platform to reflect on hockey’s achievements and discuss its future direction, allowing national associations to exchange views on the Federation’s strategic framework and upcoming priorities.
During the event, Ikram announced that Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani would receive the FIH President’s Award in recognition of his support for hockey. He also presented honours to the QOC and Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain for their contributions to the sport and their role in hosting the Congress.
The programme began on October 21 with an FIH Executive Board meeting, followed by the National Associations Forum and the FIH Awards Ceremony on October 23, where the winners of the FIH Hockey Stars Awards 2026 were announced.
The National Associations Forum focused on the International Olympic Committee’s “Fit for the Future” initiative and the FIH’s new strategic framework. Discussions provided an opportunity for representatives to share expertise and examine developments shaping international sport, alongside priorities for hockey’s continued growth.
Doha’s hosting of the Congress reflects Qatar’s efforts to strengthen ties with international sports federations, support the Olympic Movement and provide a platform for sporting leaders to exchange ideas on the future of sport.
