Qatar's Marine World: The Ecosystems Driving Wildlife Diversity

Seagrass Meadows — Underwater Pastures That Feed Everything

Qatar's seagrass meadows are the foundation of its marine food web. These underwater grasslands carpet vast areas of the shallow Gulf floor, particularly in the northwest and along the peninsula's coastline.
Seagrass is the exclusive food source for dugongs. It is primary habitat for juvenile fish and crustaceans. Sea turtles feed on it. It produces oxygen, absorbs carbon, stabilises sediment, and filters coastal water.
Marine heatwaves in the Arabian Gulf, which are intensifying with climate change, pose one of the greatest threats to Qatar's seagrass beds. Hot, shallow water combined with reduced light penetration can trigger large-scale seagrass die-off events. Qatar's conservation authorities include seagrass monitoring and restoration in their ongoing marine programmes.
