Al-Ittihad fans with Messi banner
Saudi Pro League title contenders Al-Ittihad’s fans call their club for the signing of Argentinan superstar Lionel Messi ahead of their high-octane clash against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr on Thursday.
Ahead of the game in when Ronaldo and his team came out for warm-ups the crowd chanted the name of Messi. After Al-Nassr’s 1-0 defeat on Thursday Al-Ittihad go to the table with one point lead. After full-time, the frustration got the better of the former Manchester United star, who ripped off his captain’s armband as he trudged towards the tunnel.
Al-Ittihad took a cheeky dig by tweeting a clip of Ronaldo getting tackled, captioning the post: “Where is Ronaldo?”
After the final whistle, the Portugal international was seen shaking his head in anger before kicking five water bottles on his way off the pitch, digging up a mound of turf in the process.
The Portuguese superstar then took to social media after the match to post a message and focused on the need for the side to stay positive after the loss.
This is the second defeat of Al-Nassr’s league campaign, while Ronaldo has now failed to score in his last two games.
The rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo goes back to their days in the Spanish League when they played for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively and were helping their sides compete for the top honours in European football.
However, since Ronaldo’s move away from Madrid and Messi’s move to PSG the prospect of those two meeting against each other on the pitch on regular basis has not been a possibility.
