Abha Saudi Arabia

When to Go

One of the most picturesque places to visit in Saudi Arabia is Abha in the Aseer region. A city where you can catch an incredible, breathtaking view! β›°οΈπŸŒ³πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¦ #Saudi #Expatriates #news #expats #

Summer (roughly June through August) is peak season, when Abha's mild climate offers the sharpest contrast to the rest of the country and local festivals like the Abha Season and Al-Soudah Season bring extra events and activities. That said, the cooler months bring their own appeal β€” clearer skies for mountain views, fewer crowds, and a quieter version of the same scenery.

A Brief History

Abha's roots stretch back to the 1st century AD, when it was a settlement under Nabataean influence. Muslim forces took the region in the 7th century, and it later passed through Umayyad, then Mamluk control for more than two centuries, before the Ottomans ruled it for over 300 years. Isolated for much of its history by its mountainous terrain, Abha became part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1920, and only in more recent decades has it developed into the tourism destination it is today.

Planning Tips

  • Pack layers: Even in summer, evenings in Abha can be genuinely cool, and fog can drop the temperature further with little warning.
  • Give yourself three to five days:Β That's typically enough time to cover the major sights β€” Jabal Sawda, Rijal Almaa, Art Street, Abha Dam β€” without rushing.
  • Rent a car if you can: Many of the best sights, like Rijal Almaa and Tabab, are outside the city center and easiest to reach independently.
  • Respect local customs:Β As with the rest of Saudi Arabia, modest dress and cultural sensitivity go a long way, particularly in more traditional villages outside the city.

Whether you're drawn by the cool mountain air, the cliffside villages, or simply the chance to see a side of Saudi Arabia that rarely makes it into the postcards, Abha offers a genuinely different kind of trip β€” one built around fog-wrapped peaks, stone villages clinging to cliffs, and a slower pace than the rest of the Kingdom.
