Torrential rains have forced thousands of people to flee their homes in coastal areas along the Arabian Sea in India and Pakistan, amid expectations of a tropical storm forming by Friday.

Officials said in statements today that the death toll from floods caused by the rains has reached 28 people since last Sunday, due to drowning or rain-related causes.

Disaster management authorities said in a statement that more than 18,000 people have been evacuated from coastal cities since last Sunday, while meteorologists in India and Pakistan warned of strong winds and more heavy rains in coastal areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department noted that a depression off the state of Gujarat is expected to develop into a tropical storm by Friday, but it expected the storm to move away from the Indian coast over the next two days.

In Pakistan, authorities have warned of flash floods in two areas of the southern Sindh province, which is still recovering from massive floods in 2022 that submerged vast areas of the country and damaged the economy.
