As part of his regional tour, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III is currently in Qatar, engaging in discussions with the country's officials to strengthen the ongoing US-Qatar partnership in peace and security matters.
The Secretary of Defense shared a photo on the X platform upon his arrival in Doha, expressing anticipation for productive conversations that will further enhance the robust defense collaboration between the United States and Qatar, including Qatar's hosting of US forces at Al Udeid Air Base.
Secretary Austin emphasized the significance of the US-Qatar defense relationship in addressing mutual security challenges during a meeting with Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. He personally thanked the Prime Minister for Qatar's generous hosting of US troops and the continuous expansion of the bilateral defense ties, built on mutual respect and trust.
Additionally, Secretary Austin commended Qatar for its crucial role as a mediator in securing the release of hostages, particularly highlighting Qatar's joint efforts with Egypt to secure the release of individuals held by Hamas. He affirmed that both Qatar and the United States are set to take formal steps to advance and strengthen their bilateral defense relationship.
