Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Moves to Restore Houtan Meadow in Al Shamal

Doha, September 19, 2026 : The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), represented by the Wildlife Development Department, organized an event to restore the "Houtan" meadow in the northern area of Al Shamal.

Part of Broader Meadow Rehabilitation Efforts

The initiative forms part of MECC's ongoing efforts to rehabilitate Qatar's meadows and enhance natural vegetation cover, while protecting the nation's biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems.

300 Seedlings, 5,000 Seeds Planted

The rehabilitation work included planting 300 seedlings of native wild plant species and sowing approximately 5,000 seeds of species suited to the site's natural conditions. The effort is expected to increase vegetation density, support natural regeneration, and improve the overall condition of the meadow, with participation from several ministry officials and specialists.

Head of the Plant Wildlife Section at the Wildlife Development Department Adel Mohammed Al Yafei said the Ministry continues implementing its field plans and initiatives to rehabilitate meadows and strengthen their vegetation cover. He stressed that planting and seeding efforts are a key part of national efforts to conserve the terrestrial environment and protect biodiversity, noting that using native plants helps improve natural habitat quality and enhance ecosystem stability.

Site-Specific Species Selection Key to Success

Al Yafei noted that selecting plant species adapted to each site's specific conditions is a critical factor in ensuring the success of restoration programs and sustaining their results over the long term.

Meadows a Priority for Environmental Balance

He stressed that the Ministry places high priority on meadows as a fundamental component of the nation's terrestrial environment and a key pillar of environmental balance and wildlife conservation, adding that similar programs will continue to protect and sustain natural resources.

The event forms part of a series of field projects implemented by MECC to sustain natural resources and enhance terrestrial environments across the country.
