Karakoram Highway, Pakistan–China
This highway links Islamabad to Kashgar, crossing the Karakoram Range at Khunjerab Pass, the highest paved border crossing on Earth. Its construction came at a brutal human cost: more than 900 workers died building it, roughly one death for every 1.5 kilometers of road. A major landslide in 2010 submerged 22 kilometers of the highway under a new lake, forcing a bypass and boat crossings that are still in use today.
