Staying safer on roads like these
If you ever find yourself driving a route with a reputation like these, a few basics matter more than usual:
- Travel by daylight. Clear the worst stretches before dark, when hazards and animals are hardest to spot.
- Inspect the vehicle first. Brakes, tires, fluids, and lights all matter more when the nearest repair shop is hours away.
- Watch the weather. Heavy rain, snow, or high wind is a reason to wait, not push through.
- Respect local knowledge. Residents who drive these roads daily know exactly where the danger sits visitors often don't, and that gap is where accidents happen.
These roads endure because, in many cases, there's simply no alternative route to the places they serve. For everyone else, they remain some of the most extreme drives on Earth equal parts warning and spectacle.
