Fish to Limit Due to Mercury:
.jpg)
- Shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish: These are large, long-lived predatory fish that accumulate the most mercury; health guidelines generally recommend limiting or avoiding these, especially for pregnant women and young children.
- Bluefin tuna and other large tuna: Delicious, but higher in mercury than smaller fish, so best in moderation (canned light tuna is lower-mercury than albacore or bluefin).
Rule of thumb: Smaller, shorter-lived fish (sardines, anchovies, herring, mackerel) tend to be the healthiest overall, high in omega-3s, low in mercury, and often more sustainable too.
