Washington: Meta has unveiled Muse Code, a new artificial intelligence coding agent designed to help software developers perform complex engineering tasks across large codebases, as competition intensifies in the rapidly expanding market for AI-powered programming tools.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Muse Code is now available in beta, describing the system as capable of carrying out complete software engineering assignments across large software repositories.
The new agent is designed to handle multiple stages of development, including planning modifications, writing code and validating the results, allowing programmers to use AI for more sophisticated tasks rather than relying on it solely for individual code suggestions.
Built for Large Software Projects
Muse Code is powered by Meta’s Muse Spark coding model and operates through a terminal-based interface. According to reports, developers can install the agent using a single command.
One of its key features is its ability to divide large assignments among multiple AI sub-agents. When a software engineering task becomes sufficiently complex, Muse Code can create separate agents that work simultaneously on different parts of the project.
These sub-agents operate in isolated worktrees, helping prevent their work from interfering with one another or affecting the developer’s main working copy.
Meta said that during testing, the system was able to work on six different features for a game simultaneously without collisions, demonstrating how the parallel-agent approach could accelerate development on large projects.
AI Coding Competition Intensifies
The launch represents another significant step in Meta’s efforts to strengthen its position in generative AI and AI-assisted software development.
Coding agents have emerged as one of the most competitive areas of artificial intelligence, with technology companies increasingly developing systems capable of understanding entire software repositories, debugging problems, generating features and completing multi-step engineering assignments.
Muse Code’s focus on large codebases and parallel AI agents could make it particularly relevant to professional developers and organisations managing complex software projects.
