Practical Tips
  • Currency: Omani Rial (OMR). Cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, but carry cash for souks and smaller establishments.
  • Dress: Modest clothing is advised in public spaces and near religious sites. Lightweight cotton layers work well year-round.
  • Visas: Most nationalities can obtain an e-visa online via the Royal Oman Police portal. GCC nationals do not require one.
  • Safety: Salalah is a safe destination. Oman has fortified its borders thoroughly, and the city presents no security concerns for travellers.
  • Language: Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.

A Final Word

Salalah is, in the truest sense, a surprise. It subverts every expectation of what the Middle East should look like and feel like. Here, coconut palms shade ancient ruins, frankincense smoke drifts through mountain air, dolphins swim alongside snorkellers on empty beaches, and the mountains turn greener than Ireland in the rain. It is, as many who visit come to believe, one of the best-kept secrets in the world and a journey that rewards everyone who makes it.

Best experienced: During the Khareef (late June–September) or shortly after (October–November). Plan ahead, rent a car, and leave plenty of time to get wonderfully, happily lost.
