Reminder to the public: Banks in Qatar will continue to accept old currency bank notes for bank transactions until 31st of December 2021 only.

Banks in Qatar will continue to accept the old edition of the Qatari Riyal banknotes in their branches and cash deposit ATMS until December 31, 2021, in accordance with the directives of the Qatar Central Bank (QCB).

QCB previously announced in February that old banknotes will only be accepted until July 1. However, the deadline for exchanging the fourth edition Qatari banknotes has been extended until the end of this month.

In an SMS to customers, QNB said: "Please note that the deadline to exchange the 4th edition Qatari notes has been extended until 31 December, 2021. You may also deposit them in QNB branches, ATMs, ITMs and bulk deposit machines during this time."

QNB also put out a tweet in this regard yesterday, asking customers ‏to "be sure to exchange your 4th edition Qatari notes before December 31st, 2021."

QCB also stated that after the deadline, the banknotes of the fourth series will become 'illegal' and 'indemnified' currency, with the holder entitled to recover the value of the remaining notes from QCB within a period not exceeding 10 years from the date of the withdrawal decision.

In a related tweet, Doha Bank said: "Kindly note that the acceptance period of old Qatari currency notes has been extended. The fourth issuance notes will be accepted at our branches and Cash Deposit ATMs until December 31, 2021."

QIB also tweeted about the extension, saying: ‏"We will continue to exchange the old Qatari Currency notes until 31st December 2021."

The bank encouraged customers to exchange the old notes using QIB cash deposit machines."

We will continue accepting the old edition of the banknotes in all of our branches and ATMs until the 31st of December 2021," Ahlibank tweeted.

HSBC Qatar also sent an SMS to customers, saying: "Please note that we will continue accepting the Qatari currency fourth issuance of bank notes across all our branches and ATMs until 31st of December 2021."

Qatar's new currency notes were introduced in December last year, the 5th series of the Qatar Riyal banknotes, with designs that reflect Qatari tradition, Islamic history, culture, flora and fauna, and development in the field of education, sport, and economy.

Banks are reminding the public to exchange their old Qatar currencies before the end of the year.
