DOHA — Qatar University (QU) is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence across its academic and administrative operations as part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at enhancing efficiency, advancing research and innovation, and improving the quality of services provided to students, faculty members, researchers, and staff.

The university's approach rests on an integrated strategic vision to build an advanced technological system that supports education, scientific research, and institutional management, keeping pace with rapid change in AI and digital transformation. In recent years, QU has shifted from standalone digital initiatives to a more integrated institutional system built on smart services, research and innovation, and responsible governance of emerging technologies.

A modern digital backbone

Associate Vice President for Technology and Information Security at QU Dr. Nayef Al Yafei said the university possesses one of the most modern digital infrastructures in the State of Qatar, having invested strategically in an advanced hybrid data center that relies on flexible cloud computing systems and ultra-fast networks to support a massive flow of data.

Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr. Al Yafei said high-performance computing systems have been developed to serve researchers and students in digital simulation and AI, alongside significant attention to cybersecurity and data protection — forming the backbone of a knowledge-based economy in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. He said the university had prepared a comprehensive digital transformation plan whose priority initiatives, identified for the next three years, span building staff digital capabilities, upgrading infrastructure and information security, and developing AI and data-analysis capacity. Implementation, he noted, has already begun, with progress monitored against national laws and standards set by bodies such as the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the National Cyber Security Agency.

He said a specialized AI laboratory is being prepared with partners to create an integrated environment for brainstorming, applying ideas, and measuring their results — a nucleus for practical AI application and a draw for entrepreneurs. Analytical and generative AI tools have already been deployed to support university services, including the student academic advising system, and to lift administrative productivity through intelligent robots that speed up routine tasks.

Dr. Al Yafei said QU had completed a comprehensive study to guide AI integration across academic programs. Advanced courses in deep learning, robotics, and the Internet of Things have been embedded as core and elective components of science, engineering, and technology curricula, while AI has been woven into health sciences programs through biomedical diagnostics, health data analytics, and medical informatics. New areas of study on digital ethics and the societal impact of AI have been introduced in the social sciences and humanities, and curricula in financial technology and big data analytics have been expanded.

“Qatar University views technology and artificial intelligence as enabling and complementary tools rather than substitutes for educators,” Dr. Al Yafei said, adding that the future of higher education lies in a blended model combining the speed of technology with the depth of direct instruction. He said he expects the university to reach 99 percent digitalization within four years under its updated strategic plan.

From awareness to practical capability

Dr. Rateb Jabbar, AI Advisor at the Office of the President of Qatar University, said the university has taken a phased approach to integrating AI into teaching, university services, research, and institutional governance, developing dedicated learning pathways and specialized courses to strengthen AI literacy among students across all disciplines.

Among the key initiatives, he cited the course “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education” within the General Education curriculum, and an elective on AI in Medicine for health-college students covering health data analysis and clinical decision support. QU has also approved a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence under the College of Engineering, to launch in Fall 2026, as a step toward preparing national talent in machine learning, data analytics, and intelligent systems.

On institutional services, Dr. Jabbar said the university has adopted a dual approach of developing in-house AI solutions while leveraging partnerships with global technology companies, making Gemini Enterprise and Microsoft Copilot available to its community. In collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Scale AI, QU developed an AI-powered digital academic advisor platform, while its AI Research and Innovation Hub — launched with the Ministry and Google Cloud — provides advanced computing infrastructure and Vertex AI for research across healthcare, sustainability, Arabic language technologies, cybersecurity, education, and big data.

Dr. Jabbar said these developments reflect QU's shift from raising awareness about AI to building sustainable, practical capabilities, integrating training, implementation, governance, and innovation into a comprehensive digital culture that supports Qatar's digital transformation agenda and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
