Instagram has announced a series of updates that will begin rolling out this week, including extending the duration of short Reels videos to a maximum of three minutes while changing the traditional square grid design on users’ pages to a rectangular design. The platform aims to extend the duration of short videos to three minutes to support users who want to post longer clips.
In this context, the platform’s head Adam Mosseri said that the change in the grid design aims to keep pace with the nature of the vertical content popular among users, adding that "square photos are sort of the heritage of Instagram. But at this point, most of what’s uploaded, both photos and videos, are vertical in their orientation." Instagram has recently announced another change which is the addition of a new tab on the Reels page that displays videos that friends have liked or commented on, similar to the Friends Activity feature, removed years ago due to privacy concerns.
These changes come at a time of increasing competition among social media platforms, with Instagram seeking to strengthen its position as the preferred destination for creative content.
