- Using unofficial third-party websites that charge $50 to $80 — they simply redirect you to the official DHS site.
- Applying with an expired passport — your ESTA becomes automatically invalid.
- Answering eligibility questions carelessly — a wrong answer can trigger a 'Travel Not Authorized' result.
- Not applying early enough — 'Pending' results occasionally take the full 72 hours.
- Forgetting that ESTA is tied to a specific passport — getting a new passport means applying for a new ESTA.
