Asian Games: Qatar Raises Medal Tally to 12

Nagoya, September 29, 2026 : The Qatari delegation won five medals (three silver and two bronze) on Tuesday at the 20th Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026, currently underway in Japan through October 4, raising its overall tally to 12 medals — three gold, five silver, and four bronze.

Shooting Team Adds Silver in Team Trap

Qatar's shooting team opened the day's medal haul with silver in the men's team trap event, as shooters Mohammed Al Rumaihi, Saeed Hamad Abu Sharib, and Angelo Scalzone finished second with a score of 349 targets. Kuwait won gold, while Kazakhstan took bronze. The result added to Qatar's shooting tally following earlier gold medals in the individual and team skeet events.

In the women's team trap competition, Qatar's trio of Kholoud Hassan Al Khalaf, Ray Bassil, and Meitha Hamad Al Binali finished fourth with 324 targets, one target behind bronze medalists Kuwait. In the men's individual trap final, Saeed Hamad Abu Sharib finished sixth, with Kuwait's Khaled Al Mudhaf winning gold.

QSAA President Praises Shooters' Performance

President of the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association Dr. Meshaal Al Nasr said the team trap silver reflected the outstanding level shown by Qatari shooters throughout the Games, following their two skeet gold medals. He congratulated the team on maintaining their position among the leading squads through an intense three-day contest.

Mohammed Al Rumaihi and Saeed Hamad Abu Sharib both credited the result to sustained focus and collective effort throughout a highly competitive event.

Athletics Delivers Silver, Bronze

In athletics, Qatar won two medals. The men's 4x400m relay team of Bassem Mohamed, Ismail Abakar, Youssef Abdulaziz Jibrin, and Ammar Ibrahim claimed silver with a season-best time of 3:00.93. Abubaker Abdalla won bronze in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:45.25, while teammate Hatem Hameed finished sixth. Abdalla dedicated his achievement to the Qatari people, saying he had given his all despite facing highly experienced competition.

Handball Team Settles for Silver After Bahrain Final

In men's handball, Qatar's bid for a fourth consecutive Asian Games gold ended in a narrow 33-32 loss to Bahrain in a closely fought final. Bahrain led 16-15 at halftime, and after Qatar briefly leveled the score at 19-19, Bahrain regained control before holding on to secure victory despite a late Qatari fightback.

Yakhlef Claims Weightlifting Bronze

Qatari weightlifter Wissal Yakhlef won bronze in the women's over-86kg competition with a total of 273kg, finishing behind China's Li Wenwen (gold, 310kg) and North Korea's Park Hye-jeong (silver, 300kg). President of the Qatar Weightlifting Federation Mohammed Youssef Al Mana praised Yakhlef's performance against strong Chinese and North Korean competition, while Yakhlef herself described it as the most difficult medal of her career given the caliber of her rivals.

Volleyball Team Falls to India in Five-Set Thriller

Qatar's volleyball team, having already secured second-round qualification, finished runner-up in Group C after a 2-3 loss to India in a marathon five-set match (26-28, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22), having won the first two sets before India completed the comeback.

Padel Team Set for Opening Match

Qatar's padel pair, Mishari and Rashid Nawaf, will begin their campaign against Kuwait on Wednesday, aiming to advance to the second round.
