Hawksbill Sea Turtle — Nesting on Qatar's Northern Beaches
Qatar's coastline supports four species of sea turtles: green, hawksbill, olive ridley, and loggerhead. Of these, the hawksbill is the most significant conservation focus.
Hawksbill turtles are critically endangered. Fewer than 25,000 nesting females exist globally. Their beautifully patterned shells made them targets for the decorative trade for centuries. Their numbers collapsed long before most people were paying attention.
Qatar's northern coast, particularly Fuwairit Beach, provides one of the most important nesting habitats for hawksbill turtles in the entire Arabian Gulf region. Female hawksbills return to the same beaches where they hatched to lay their own eggs. Fuwairit's soft sand makes digging easy. The beach undergoes a full cleaning campaign before nesting season. It then closes entirely to protect nesting activity.
Qatar has protected sea turtles along all of its coastlines since 2002. The programme monitors nesting sites each season, rescues injured turtles, and collects scientific data on nesting success rates. In 2025 and 2026, the Ministry of Environment intensified these efforts with expanded coastal patrol programmes.
