Ruppell's Fox — The Desert's Most Adaptable Canid

Two fox species live in Qatar. Ruppell's fox is the more specialised desert dweller of the two. It is smaller than the red fox, with enormous ears that radiate body heat and enhance hearing in low-humidity desert air.
Ruppell's fox is nocturnal and omnivorous. It eats rodents, insects, birds, fruit, and carrion, depending on what the desert offers. It shelters in dens during the day and covers large distances at night in search of food across seemingly barren terrain.
In Qatar it is most likely to be detected through tracks on dune slipfaces in the early morning. Night spotlighting excursions in protected desert areas occasionally produce direct sightings. The fox is shy and fast, so most observations are brief.
