Diabetes can develop quietly, and some warning signs are easy to mistake for unrelated everyday problems.
Many people associate diabetes with constant thirst, frequent urination and unexplained weight loss. Those are important signs, but high blood glucose can also produce less obvious changes. Symptoms alone cannot confirm diabetes—a blood test is needed.
1. Blurred or changing vision
High blood glucose can temporarily affect fluid levels in the eyes, causing vision to become blurred or fluctuate. Sudden or persistent vision changes should always be assessed, whatever the suspected cause.
2. Cuts that take longer to heal
A small wound that remains open, repeatedly becomes irritated or heals unusually slowly may be a warning sign. Diabetes can affect circulation and the body’s ability to repair tissue.
3. Recurrent infections or thrush
Repeated urinary tract, skin or yeast infections—including recurring genital thrush—can occur when blood glucose is high. Frequent infections deserve medical attention rather than repeated self-treatment alone.
4. Tingling, burning or numbness
Pins and needles, burning pain or reduced sensation—especially in the feet or legs—may reflect nerve damage. These symptoms have many possible causes, but diabetes is one condition a clinician may consider.
5. Persistent tiredness or unusual hunger
Feeling exhausted despite adequate rest, or becoming unusually hungry even after eating, may occur when the body cannot use glucose effectively. These signs are nonspecific but matter more when they appear alongside thirst, frequent urination or weight loss.
When to arrange a diabetes test
Speak with a healthcare professional if symptoms persist, occur together or if you have risk factors such as a family history of diabetes, excess weight, high blood pressure or previous gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes can develop rapidly, particularly in children and younger people, so sudden thirst, frequent urination, tiredness and weight loss need prompt medical assessment.
