Suhail Season Begins in Qatar on August 24

DOHA, Qatar: Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has announced that today, August 24, marks the beginning of the Suhail season, coinciding with the annual rising of the Suhail star over the Arabian Peninsula.

The appearance of Suhail, internationally known as Canopus, is traditionally regarded as an important seasonal marker in the region. Its rising signals the gradual transition away from the peak summer heat and the beginning of more moderate weather conditions.

53-Day Suhail Season

According to QCH, the Suhail season will continue for 53 days. During this period, temperatures are expected to gradually ease, particularly during the night.

The change is linked to the gradual cooling of seawater, which contributes to a slow reduction in the intensity of the heat. While daytime temperatures may remain high at the beginning of the season, residents can expect a gradual improvement in weather conditions as the season progresses.

Four Phases of Suhail

QCH said the Suhail season is divided into four phases, each representing a stage in the seasonal transition:

Tarfah
Jabha
Zubrah
Sarfah

These phases traditionally help mark the progression from the intense summer period towards cooler and more pleasant conditions.

A Traditional Seasonal Marker

The rising of Suhail has long held significance in Arabian culture and traditional weather observation. Its appearance has historically been used as an indication that the harshest period of summer is beginning to ease.
