Scientists from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) discovered a new star that is described as "large and bright". The star was discovered in observations of the galaxy collected by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The star, called "Mothra", belongs to the class of extremely rare "kaiju" stars, also known as distant monster stars with anomalously huge apparent brightness.

Through the data, the team was able to work out the properties of the star and they predict it as a binary consisting of two supergiant stars, one red and one blue.

Scientists expect that there is something closer to the star that is giving it an additional magnification boost. It could be something close to the size of a galaxy or a star cluster, which is between 10,000 and 2.5 million times the mass of the Sun.

The team says that the object could be a dwarf galaxy almost entirely consisting of dark matter which is the invisible glue of the universe.

Most galaxies have more dark matter than normal matter, and this potential discovery suggests that they may be relatively common in the universe.
