Saudi Arabia Warns Against Hidden Desert Ponds Covered by Sand

Riyadh: Saudi authorities have warned residents and visitors to stay away from desert ponds and rainwater pools that may be concealed beneath loose sand following recent rainfall, saying they pose a serious safety risk despite appearing harmless from the surface. 

Officials said heavy rain in several parts of the Kingdom can leave behind temporary ponds and water-filled depressions that are gradually covered by drifting sand. These hidden pools may have unstable ground and unexpected depths, creating a danger for motorists, off-road enthusiasts and campers. 

The warning comes as authorities continue to urge the public not to enter valleys, flood-prone areas or water accumulation sites during and after rainfall. Even shallow-looking pools can conceal soft mud, strong currents or sudden drop-offs capable of trapping vehicles and people. 

Motorists travelling through desert regions have been advised to avoid driving across waterlogged terrain or areas where the ground appears damp or uneven, as sand-covered ponds may not be visible until it is too late. Authorities also encouraged people to monitor official weather alerts and follow safety instructions issued by the relevant agencies. 

Emergency officials stressed that desert landscapes can change rapidly after rainfall, with shifting sand masking hazardous areas. They urged outdoor enthusiasts to plan trips carefully, use designated routes where possible and avoid unnecessary risks until conditions improve.
