Qatar and Kuwait Coordinate Support for Pakistan's Role in US–Iran Mediation

Senior officials from Doha and Kuwait City held a telephone conversation on Sunday to align their positions on backing Pakistan's ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.

Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held a telephone conversation on Sunday with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah. The call, reported by Qatar News Agency (QNA), centred on coordinating both countries' support for Pakistan's active mediation role between the United States and Iran.

The two officials examined practical ways their governments could reinforce the mediation process as part of a wider set of diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions across the Gulf region and building conditions for more durable stability.

Qatar's position on dialogue

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani underlined the importance of all parties engaging meaningfully with the current mediation framework and committing to dialogue as the primary tool for resolving the core issues between Washington and Tehran.

He further noted that sustained diplomatic engagement remains the most viable path toward a lasting agreement between the two sides, and that stepping back from that engagement risks reigniting the cycle of escalation that the mediation effort is specifically designed to interrupt.

Bilateral agenda

Beyond the Iran-related discussions, the two ministers also used the call to review the state of Qatar–Kuwait bilateral relations. They exchanged views on strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors, reflecting the broader commitment both Gulf states maintain toward deepening intra-regional ties alongside their shared international diplomatic goals.

Pakistan's mediation role

The call between Doha and Kuwait City reflects a regional consensus forming around Pakistan's recent diplomatic initiative. Islamabad has taken on an increasingly visible role in facilitating direct and indirect contacts between American and Iranian officials. Pakistan's efforts have focused on three interconnected areas:

Pakistan's engagement draws on its position as a country that maintains working relationships with both Washington and Tehran — an increasingly rare diplomatic asset in the current environment. Its involvement has been welcomed by several Gulf states who have an acute interest in preventing further deterioration of security conditions in waters adjacent to their own territory.

Sunday's call between Qatar and Kuwait occurs against a backdrop of intensified regional diplomacy. Multiple Gulf states have been actively engaged in parallel efforts to support negotiations and prevent military escalation from foreclosing the possibility of a negotiated outcome between the US and Iran. The coordination between Doha and Kuwait City signals that those efforts are now becoming more explicitly aligned, with smaller and mid-sized regional actors playing a more structured role in supporting third-party mediation rather than leaving it entirely to direct bilateral channels.
