Qatar Gears Up for the Dazzling Geminid Meteor Shower on December 13

The Geminid meteor shower, one of the most dazzling celestial events of the year, is set to grace Qatar's skies on the night of December 13, 2024. Known for their bright, fast streaks of light, the Geminids have been active since November 19 and will peak during this one magical night.

With up to 120 meteors visible per hour under ideal conditions, NASA describes the Geminids as “one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers.” Unlike most meteor showers caused by comets, the Geminids are the result of debris from an asteroid, 3200 Phaethon, making them unique in origin.

Astrophotographer Ajith Everester, founder of Everester Observatory, notes that the nearly full moon (96%) on December 13 may obscure the faint meteors, but the brightest ones will still be visible. “It will still be a spectacular sight,” Everester said, recalling last year’s event, where over 4,000 spectators witnessed over 1,000 meteors at Al Kharrara.

Navin Anand, amateur astronomer and co-founder of the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club, highlighted that despite the moon's brightness, up to 40 meteors per hour are expected during the peak. However, a prime viewing window will occur between 4 am and 5 am when the moon sets, allowing stargazers to spot over 100 meteors in a short period.

To celebrate this celestial event, the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club, in collaboration with Everester Observatory, will host an observation gathering on December 13 at Al Kharrara. The event starts at 10 pm and will continue until sunrise, with the best views anticipated late into the night.

Participants are advised to dress warmly for the chilly winter night. Entry to the event is free, and attendees can register through the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club’s website. For more details, contact Ajith Everester at 55482045 or Navin Anand at 30889582 via WhatsApp.

Don’t miss the chance to witness one of nature’s most stunning spectacles lighting up Qatar’s skies!
