Qatar Concludes Participation in ITU Plenipotentiary Conference

ITU Plenipotentiary Conference

The State of Qatar participated in the closing plenary session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 hosted by the Romanian capital Bucharest over three weeks.

The closing session included the signing ceremony of The Final Act, which define the vision and roadmap for the global communications and information technology sector for the next four years until the next conference.

The State of Qatar signed The Final Act, represented by the Director of the Consumer Affairs Department at Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) Amal Salem Al Hanawi, which included all the decisions adopted by the conference, including the decision to host the State of Qatar for the Plenipotentiary Conference in 2026, and ITU's strategic and budget plans, where they define the overall priorities of the Union for the next four years and the financial resources available to achieve the main outputs, in addition to other decisions that have been approved.

The CRA participated in many meetings of specialized and subsidiary working groups, committees, and plenary sessions, to follow up and discuss a number of important topics that were presented as contributions from the Arab Group and other regional groups. These topics included the protection of consumers of telecommunications services, issues of outer space, space sustainability, and the 2030 Agenda for the use of outer space, as well as topics related to the internet, cyber security, international communications regulations, and others.

The Plenipotentiary Conference is the ITU's supreme policy-making body and is the main event in which the Member States decide on the future role of the Union and its ability to influence and guide the development of ICTs globally.

The conference provided an opportunity to meet with stakeholders, decision-makers, and a number of international companies operating in the ICT sector to exchange views and experiences, strengthen partnerships, and open up prospects for cooperation, to develop the sector in the country in line with the best practices and international standards.

The ITU is the United Nations agency specializing in the field of information and communication technology. The agency was established in 1865 to facilitate the international connectivity of telecommunication networks. The Union's membership consists of 193 countries and about 900 members from companies, universities, and international and regional organizations. The State of Qatar joined the ITU in 1973.
