Qatar Charity to support more than 830 specialised surgeries in Syria

Qatar Charity is supporting a major medical campaign in Syria that will provide more than 830 free specialised surgeries across five governorates, in an effort to widen access to treatment for patients unable to afford or reach specialised care.

The campaign was launched on Sunday by Syria's Ministry of Health and will cover Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Idlib. It is being implemented by the Syria Relief and Development (SRD) organisation, with support from Qatar Charity.

According to the Ministry of Health, the initiative will provide open-heart surgery, corrective surgery for children with congenital heart defects, cochlear implants and cataract surgery — procedures that many Syrian families have struggled to obtain amid the strain on the country's healthcare system.

The campaign was inaugurated at the University Cardiac Surgery Hospital in Damascus in the presence of Assistant Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abir Qudsi and Qatar's Ambassador to Syria, Khalifa bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud.

The initiative is the latest in a series of Qatari medical efforts to strengthen Syria's health sector. In May, Qatar Charity carried out a mission at Al-Waleed Hospital in Homs that completed 16 advanced cardiac catheterisation procedures for children with congenital heart defects, repairing the conditions without the need for open-heart surgery.

Qatar Charity has said such campaigns form part of a broader humanitarian strategy that combines urgent emergency response with longer-term efforts to build local medical capacity and ensure access to specialised care for the most vulnerable.
