HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, and HE Permanent Representative of Denmark Ambassador Martin Bille Hermann, chaired the first session to facilitate informal consultations on the reform of the UN Security Council, in accordance with the resolutions of the General Assembly calling for the reform of the Council in terms of equitable representation, and the increase in the number of its members, and other issues related to the reform of the Council.

The informal session of the negotiations was held in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, which is the first session of the intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform, and was attended by HE President of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid.

The President of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in a speech to member states, said that the goal is to breathe new life into the debate on Security Council reform, stressing that the Council needs to represent today's world, to be more representative and inclusive, so that it reflects the realities of international diplomacy for the 21st century.

The President of the General Assembly for the current session decided to appoint HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani and HE Ambassador Martin Bille Hermann in November of last year to facilitate informal consultations on the reform of the Security Council.

The appointment of HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani to this task comes in recognition of the role of the State of Qatar in the United Nations, its belief in the principle of multilateralism, and its keenness to develop the mechanisms of the international organization's work to achieve its goals, including reforming the work of the Security Council.
