Pakistan to Strengthen labour ties with Qatar

The government of Pakistan has commended Qatar's labor sector reforms and expressed a desire to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in the areas of manpower and human resources, according to H E Muhammad Jawad Sohrab Malik, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development.

During his visit to Qatar, Malik, at the invitation of Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, met with the Minister of Labour and signed letters of intent with two private companies for the recruitment of Pakistani manpower.

He praised Qatar's recent reforms and highlighted the increased appeal of Qatar as a destination for Pakistani workers due to a better quality of life and higher financial remuneration. Malik emphasized the role of the 300,000-strong Pakistani community in Qatar's development and expressed Pakistan's eagerness to enhance the number of Pakistani workers, especially in skilled roles.

He mentioned plans to sign letters of intent with six to eight employers in Qatar, focusing on sectors such as construction, hospitality, healthcare, and oil and gas. Malik also highlighted the government's efforts to align skills education in Pakistan with global job market demands, working closely with Pakistan's National Vocational and Technical Training Commission.

He emphasized the importance of remittances sent by migrant workers to Pakistan's economy, with Pakistani workers in Qatar remitting an average of $1 billion annually. Malik disclosed plans to make language learning, particularly Arabic for workers bound for Qatar and other GCC countries, mandatory for those seeking employment abroad, submitting a proposal to the Cabinet of Pakistan for consideration.
