ATHENS, August 31, 2026: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has said that Lebanon’s stability is essential not only for the country itself but also for the wider region and Europe, warning that instability in Lebanon could have broader repercussions.

Aoun made the remarks during a summit in Athens with Greek President Constantine Tassoulas, where the two leaders discussed Lebanon’s security, regional developments and bilateral relations.

Aoun: Diplomacy Is the Best Solution

The Lebanese President said Lebanon remains committed to peace and is determined to end the state of hostility with Israel. He stressed that diplomacy, rather than military force, offers the best way to achieve lasting solutions.

Aoun also reflected on the heavy toll that repeated conflicts have taken on Lebanon, saying the country has lived through the tragedies of wars and that the time has come for it to enjoy stability and relief from further violence.

Framework Agreement Must Be Implemented in Full

Aoun said the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which was signed under United States sponsorship, cannot be implemented by one side alone.

He stressed that the agreement must be implemented by both sides in full and not selectively, and asked Greece to assist diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring its implementation.

Greece Reaffirms Support for Lebanon

During his visit to Greece, Aoun also met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The Greek leader said the two countries are seeking to elevate their bilateral relationship to the level of a strategic partnership.

Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence and unity. He also confirmed continued Greek support for the Lebanese Army and assistance with reconstruction efforts.

Lebanon Seeks Stability Amid Regional Tensions

The discussions in Athens come as Lebanon continues to navigate a difficult regional environment shaped by security tensions and broader geopolitical pressures.

Aoun’s remarks underscored Beirut’s focus on diplomacy, the implementation of existing agreements and international support as key elements in securing stability for Lebanon and reducing the risk of wider regional escalation.
