Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Saturday, 4 April 2026, to discuss the energy crisis triggered by the ongoing United States and Israeli war on Iran. The meeting marked the second stop of her Gulf tour, following Saudi Arabia, with the United Arab Emirates next on her agenda.
According to her office, the leaders focused on energy challenges and explored measures to mitigate the shocks caused by disruptions in supply. Meloni assured Sheikh Tamim that Italy is prepared to contribute to the rehabilitation of Qatar’s energy infrastructure, stressing its importance for global energy security.
Italy, heavily reliant on energy imports, has been particularly affected by rising prices linked to Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which nearly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows.
A statement from the Qatari Emir’s office emphasized the need for de-escalation, urging political dialogue and diplomacy as the best means to contain the crisis and safeguard energy supply chains. Both sides also reviewed bilateral cooperation, highlighting opportunities to strengthen ties in the economy and energy sectors.
The talks come amid heightened tensions, with Iran targeting US and Israeli assets as well as Gulf energy facilities, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, which suffered significant damage in a recent missile strike. Doha has warned that such attacks will impact its natural gas export capacity.
Italian officials said Meloni’s trip aims to reinforce relations with Gulf partners and demonstrate Italy’s support against Iranian attacks. The visit also underscores the region’s critical role as a source of oil and gas for Italy. Notably, Meloni is the first leader from the European Union or NATO to travel to the Gulf since the war began in late February.
