How Labor Day is Celebrated Across the World
Labor Day is a celebration of laborers and the working class for their sacrifice and contribution towards society.
1st of May is chosen as Labor Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, a general strike for the  eight-hour workday. The event had an unfortunate end after police intervention leading to several casualties.
Today a majority of the countries around the world celebrate Labor Day in their own unique style!Â
Here are a few that stood out to us:
FRANCE:
Labor Day in France is celebrated with parades, demonstrations and lilies. While the trade union and various political parties block the streets of Paris and major cities in France, people in many areas give Lily of the valley to their loved ones as a sign of good luck.
ITALY:
Italy celebrates Labor Day in a musical fashion, with its largest free live music event in Europe. The event is popularly known as ‘Il Concertone’ held at Rome’s Piazza San Giovanni.Â
FINLAND:
Also known as ‘Vappu’, Mayday in Finland is celebrated by the working class and university students of Helsinki. Highlights of the event are speeches, music and dance performances followed by the capping of Helsinki’s Havis Amanda statue.
INDIA:
Labor Day in India was first celebrated on 1st May 1923 in Madras (now Chennai). This day is celebrated under different names in different parts of the country such as Kamgar Din (Hindi), Karmikara Dinacharane (Kannada), Karmika Dinotsavam (telugu), and Kamgar Divas (Marathi).
