Monsoon Wedding

Qatar Creates is all set to premiere the brand-new production of acclaimed director Mira Nair’s musical Monsoon Wedding, in Doha on 17 November. Based on the award-winning 2001 Indian comedy-drama of the same name, Monsoon Wedding the Musical will be on show at the Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif until 26 November.

Presented by Qatar Creates Events and the Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture, the musical is part of Qatar Creates’ lively cultural programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and beyond.

The musical features the same powerful and joyful juxtaposition of tradition and modernity that secured the original film a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and garnered nominations at the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. In the musical iteration, Doha audiences will experience the talent of a stellar Indian cast that took five years to assemble, performing an original score by Indian composer Vishal Bhardwaj, lyrics by Tony award nominee Masi Asare and Susan Birkenhead, and book by Arpita Mukherjee and Sabrina Dhawan; along with three hit songs from the film by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna, and instrumentation from the Tony Award-winning orchestrator of ‘The Band’s Visit’, Jamshied Sharifi.

An Academy-Award-nominated film maker, Mira Nair’s independent films have earned her global recognition: “Monsoon Wedding the Musical is a labour of love in every way conceivable, from the work that has gone into premiering it in Qatar to the story being celebrated on stage. I look forward to sharing this sense of joy with the audience at a time when the world needs it most. I am grateful to Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani for supporting my work from inception, and Qatar Creates and the presenting partners for their support and organisation which has made this moment possible.”

Saad Al Hudaifi, Executive Director of Qatar Creates, noted: “We are delighted to present the musical production of Monsoon Wedding in Qatar, particularly as audiences will have the honour of being the first in the world to witness the beautiful storytelling and transportive compositions of this talented cast and crew before they debut on Broadway. This is a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors and residents alike during the lively FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ events schedule.”
