Work is currently in full swing to complete the largest expansion project for fishing ports in Qatar, which includes the development of fishing ports in Al Wakra, Al Khor and Al Ruwais and the Fishermen's Terminal in Al Thakhira in the next three months.

Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Dehaimi, Director of the Fisheries Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, said this project would contribute to improving the productivity of fishing vessels and boats and maintaining the quality of fish products, as the fishing ports and the equipment and services attached to them are among the most important services that fishermen and fishing vessels need to perform their work in the appropriate conditions.

He added that the works in the fishing port development projects have come a long way, as the completion rate has reached 100 percent in each of the fishing ports of Al Khor and Al Wakra and Al Thakhira, while the completion rate in the fishing port in Ruwais has reached about 95 percent.

He pointed out that the project to expand the fishing ports and develop services in them is among the most important national programs and projects included in the second national development strategy 2018-2022, noting the launch of this development and service project for the fisheries sector and fishermen since the beginning of 2019, and implemented by Urbacon Trading and Contracting UCC under the supervision of the company Qatar Ports Management, expansion and development work in fishing ports included the establishment of floating berths for ships and boats for fishermen and privates to cover the needs of each port of marine positions and contribute to finding an appropriate solution to the problem of overcrowding of ships and boats in fishing ports.

The project also includes providing the expansion area in the fishing ports with alarm systems, firefighting, CCTV surveillance systems, boats landing slips, petrol stations, and administrative offices to serve fishermen and sea-goers, in addition to the most important services needed by fishing vessels and boats.

Abdulaziz Al-Dehaimi explained that the expansion project for the Qatari ports included the establishment of 69 marine moorings for boats and 3 marine moorings for marine control vessels at the fishing terminal, and the establishment of 208 marine moorings in Al Khor port, including 140 boat stops and 68 boat stops (Lengat), and the establishment of 368 car parks. At the fishing port of Al-Wakra, including 188 boat stops and 180 boat stops, 233 marine moorings were established in Ruwais fishing port, including 250 boat stops and 72 boat stops.

This project is considered the largest expansion project for fishing ports in the State of Qatar, which will contribute to improving the productivity and productivity of fishing vessels and boats and maintaining the quality of fish products. Significant progress has been made in the work of this project, as the completion rate has reached 100% in each of the fishing ports of Al Khor, Al Wakra and Al Thakhira Terminal. While the completion rate in the fishing port in Ruwais reached about 95%.

Given the importance of this project in developing the fisheries sector and the services attached to it, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Municipality and Environment and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, paid a field visit to the project last Thursday (August 26), during which he inspected the ongoing expansion and development works in the fishing ports, and he was accompanied on this field visit by Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani, Assistant Undersecretary for Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs and a number of directors of departments in the ministry.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Municipality and Environment manages the fishing ports in the country based on the memorandum of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers at its regular meeting No. (19) of 2013, and within the scope of the new tasks and specializations entrusted to the management of fisheries as the authority concerned with the fish sector.
