The US dollar weakened sharply against the Japanese yen on Monday after the United States and Japan confirmed they had jointly intervened in currency markets to support the Japanese currency, marking the first coordinated action of its kind in years.
The dollar dropped to around ¥155–157 per US dollar, extending losses after reaching nearly ¥164 last week, its weakest level for the yen in around four decades. The sharp move followed confirmation from Japanese and US officials that they had carried out coordinated yen-buying intervention to stabilise the currency.
Rare joint intervention
Japan’s Ministry of Finance said the intervention was conducted in coordination with the United States to curb excessive volatility in foreign exchange markets.
The move came after months of pressure on the yen, which had weakened significantly due to the wide interest-rate gap between Japan and the United States, making dollar-denominated assets more attractive to investors.
Markets react
The stronger yen weighed on Japanese export-related stocks, while currency traders remained alert to the possibility of further intervention if excessive market volatility returns.
Analysts said the coordinated action temporarily boosted confidence in the yen, although longer-term currency movements will continue to depend on monetary policy, inflation and economic conditions in both countries.
Global implications
The yen is one of the world’s most actively traded currencies, and significant movements in the USD/JPY exchange rate can influence global financial markets, trade flows and investment decisions.
Market participants are now closely watching upcoming US economic data and future policy signals from the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, which could determine whether the yen’s recovery can be sustained.
The coordinated intervention highlights growing concern among policymakers over excessive currency fluctuations and their potential impact on global financial stability.
