UN Rights Office Warns of Escalating Israeli Settler Violence in Occupied West Bank

The United Nations human rights office has warned of a sharp escalation in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, raising concerns over increasing attacks, deaths, displacement and destruction of property.

According to the UN rights office, 18 Palestinians had been killed in incidents linked to settler violence by July 2026, already exceeding the 17 deaths recorded during the whole of 2025. The UN has also warned that violence by settlers and Israeli security forces is contributing to a deteriorating security and human rights situation across the territory.

Attacks and displacement increase

The UN said Palestinian communities have faced physical attacks, property destruction and the burning of mosques, with some incidents involving settlers and Israeli security forces acting together.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the displacement of Palestinians from their homes and land. UN experts have previously said that settler violence, alongside other coercive measures, is contributing to the forced displacement of Palestinian communities in the West Bank.

A particularly deadly confrontation recently occurred in the village of Tal, where four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed during a settler-related incident, according to Reuters.

UN calls for stronger international action

The latest warning follows growing international concern over settler violence and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.

The UN human rights office has repeatedly called for Palestinian civilians to be protected and for alleged violations to be investigated and perpetrators held accountable. UN experts have also raised concerns about the role of Israeli security forces in attacks involving settlers.

The violence has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, while Israel's government has continued to advance settlement-related policies in the West Bank.

The international community broadly considers Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law, while Israel disputes that position and maintains its own claims regarding the territory.

With violence continuing to rise, the UN has urged greater international action to protect civilians, prevent further displacement and address accountability for attacks against Palestinian communities.
