The rutab season is one of the most anticipated times of the year across the United Arab Emirates, marking the height of the country's date harvest. For a few short weeks each summer, markets, souqs, and supermarkets fill with fresh, soft rutab, a seasonal delicacy that carries deep cultural and culinary significance.
What Is Rutab?
Rutab is the soft, semi-ripe stage of the date fruit. Dates pass through four ripening stages: kimri (unripe and green), khalal (yellow or red and crunchy), rutab (soft, moist, and partially ripe), and finally tamr (the fully dried dates available year-round). Rutab is prized for its fresh, juicy texture and caramel-like sweetness, a flavour that cannot be matched by the dried dates sold during the rest of the year.
When Is the Season?
The rutab season typically runs through the summer months, roughly from June to August, and peaks in July. Because rutab is highly perishable and available for only a few short weeks, its arrival is treated as a genuine seasonal event. For many Emirati families, the first fresh rutab of the year signals the true start of summer.
A Deep Cultural Heritage
Dates hold profound significance in Emirati heritage, tied to the country's long history of desert agriculture, hospitality, and self-sufficiency. The tradition is closely associated with the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding father, who made the palm tree a national symbol of generosity and resilience. The annual rutab harvest connects modern residents to that agricultural heritage and remains an important part of the nation's identity and food culture.
Popular Varieties
The UAE and the wider Gulf region produce many prized rutab varieties, each with its own texture, colour, and level of sweetness. Among the most popular are Khalas, Barhi, Dabbas, Khenaizi, Fard, Lulu, Bomaan, and Sukkari. Barhi and Khalas are especially sought after, valued for their rich flavour and smooth, melt-in-the-mouth texture at the rutab stage.
Where It Is Celebrated
The season is marked by major festivals, most notably the Liwa Date Festival and the Liwa Rutab Festival in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region, widely regarded as the heart of UAE rutab production. At these events, farmers compete for prizes and showcase their finest harvests, celebrating both the quality of the produce and the skill of local cultivation. Throughout the season, markets and souqs across all seven emirates fill with fresh rutab, drawing shoppers eager to enjoy the fruit at its seasonal best.
Health Benefits
Beyond its flavour, rutab is also highly nutritious. It is rich in natural sugars that provide quick energy, along with dietary fibre, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. In Islamic tradition, dates are especially valued for breaking fasts and are regarded as a wholesome, energising food. As a fresh, minimally processed fruit, rutab offers these benefits in their most natural seasonal form.
