Looking for a night of laughter, entertaining storytelling and old school theatre charm The Foreigner is the play to catch this February. Full of wit, twists and unforgettable characters, this hilarious comedy hits the right notes for a fun night out at the theatre in Doha.
The Foreigner tells the tale of a pathetic, repressed man, Charlie Baker, seeking refuge from his marital problems. Seeking peace and quiet, Charlie goes to a solitary fishing lodge in the American Deep South.
So he impersonates a tourist, and says that he doesn’t know English in order to get away from the pain of small talk. What is at first a little white lie soon becomes a comedy of miscommunication. Charlie watches in silence as he gets swept into ridiculous/ludicrous situations including:
A corrupt preacher
The preacher’s debutant girlfriend
Her not-so-bright younger brother
And not even the local branch of the clan
Unable to talk but able to listen in full, Charlie inadvertently uses his condition as a way of learning secrets about people around him and turns from an unwilling eavesdropper into something of an unlikely hero. The product is a farce in high gear, guided by timing, physical comedy and a rich script.
Laugh-out-loud moments that were based in smart misperceptions
Universal messages of identity, liberation and redemption
Powerful ensemble work that keeps the story chugging along
A charming combination of old fashioned comedy and contemporary banter
The Foreigner is recommended for ages 12+ and includes some mild adult themes, making it suitable for teens and adults alike.
