Google Tests Flipkart Shopping in Gemini, AI Mode

Washington, September 27, 2026 : Google has begun testing a feature that lets users buy products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly through its Gemini and AI Mode services. The test reflects Google's push to expand the role of artificial intelligence from discovering and recommending products to taking part in the purchase itself.

According to TechCrunch, some users are seeing a "Buy" button on Flipkart product listings that appear in Gemini and AI Mode. Pressing it takes the user straight to Flipkart's checkout page. The test is at an early stage and is limited to a small number of users and a small group of products, including smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories.

Google plans to expand the experience later in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season. The move comes as Google and its rivals, including OpenAI, work to add e-commerce capabilities to their AI services, moving beyond shopping suggestions to handle more of the online buying process.

Google is also developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard that allows AI agents to interact with retailers at various stages of the shopping journey, including checkout and purchase.

The company had previously said it was working with Flipkart on "agentic" shopping experiences for consumers in India, without disclosing details of the test.

The Flipkart test marks another step toward turning search engines and AI assistants from tools for finding products and comparing options into platforms that can carry out more of the shopping process, up to and including completing the purchase.
