Mogadishu: The Somali military has announced that a group of militants affiliated with the Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab movement were killed during a planned security operation in southern Somalia.

Operation Carried Out Near Harbole

According to a military statement, Danab forces of the Somali National Army, working in cooperation with international partners, conducted the operation on the outskirts of Harbole, an area under Afmadow District in the Lower Juba region.

The military said the operation targeted militants who had been involved in preparing and planting landmines and explosive devices on roads used by civilian vehicles.

Security Efforts Continue

Somali authorities said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce Al Shabaab’s influence, improve security and stability, and protect freedom of movement in areas affected by the group’s activities.

The military did not specify the exact number of militants killed in the Harbole operation.

14 Al Shabaab Members Killed in Earlier Operation

The latest announcement comes two days after Somalia’s Ministry of Defense said 14 Al Shabaab members were killed during a separate military operation in the Buulo Fulaay area of Bay region, also in southern Somalia.

Somali forces have continued operations against Al Shabaab across several regions as part of broader efforts to improve security and reduce the group’s operational capabilities.
