The Dubai business community is mourning the loss of one of its most quietly inspiring entrepreneurs. Rajiv Meherish, the Indian-origin founder and CEO of Raju Omlet, passed away on Sunday July 19 after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy that stretched far beyond the humble egg dishes that made his brand famous across the UAE.

He was a man who took something simple and made it extraordinary. And in doing so, he earned the respect and admiration of an entire community.

From Mumbai to Dubai A Journey Built on Ambition

Meherish's story is one that resonates deeply with the millions of South Asian professionals who have built their lives and careers in the Gulf. A commerce postgraduate from Mumbai University, he made the move to Dubai in 1980 with little more than determination and a sharp instinct for people.

He began his career in sales before spending several years selling media space for Khaleej Times and other leading English and Arabic newspapers, building relationships and credibility across Dubai's growing business landscape.
By 1990 he had ventured into publishing, founding and leading a successful media business that produced special occasion publications for some of the most prominent names in the UAE.

His client list read like a who's who of Dubai's institutional landscape, spanning Dubai Airport, Dubai Chamber, Dubai Municipality, the Roads and Transport Authority, DEWA, Emirates Airline and Dubai Shopping Festival a testament to the trust and reputation he had built over decades in the city.

The Birth of Raju Omlet

In 2013, after more than two decades in media, Meherish made a decision that surprised many but defined his legacy. He launched Raju Omlet  a retro-chic restaurant built around one of the most overlooked ingredients in the culinary world: the egg.

What followed was nothing short of remarkable. Through creativity, distinctive flavours and an unwavering commitment to quality, Meherish transformed a simple concept into one of Dubai's most recognisable and beloved homegrown food brands. Raju Omlet grew to seven outlets across Dubai, with two more reportedly in the pipeline at the time of his passing. His long-term vision was to take the brand beyond the UAE and onto the global stage.

It was a dream he was still actively pursuing.

A Community Mourns

News of Meherish's passing spread quickly through Dubai's business community, drawing an outpouring of tributes from those who knew him personally and professionally.

Kamal Vachani, a veteran Dubai businessman, remembered him simply as a very nice man who carried himself with humility throughout his career. It was a sentiment echoed by many who crossed paths with him over the years.

Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of Danube Group, paid a heartfelt tribute, describing Meherish as a visionary who had elevated everyday ingredients into something culturally significant. Sajan recalled visiting the restaurant personally at Meherish's invitation and being struck by both the food and the warmth of the man behind it.

He noted that what Meherish accomplished was truly special taking humble everyday egg dishes and elevating them through creativity and distinctive flavours, transforming a simple concept into a much-loved homegrown brand whose legacy would continue through the people he inspired.

Staff at Raju Omlet outlets confirmed the news and said the restaurants would continue to operate as usual a fitting tribute to a man who built something bigger than himself.

A Legacy That Lives On

Rajiv Meherish was not a man who sought the spotlight. He was someone who let his work speak for itself. From selling newspaper space in the early 1980s to building one of Dubai's most recognisable restaurant brands four decades later, his journey was one of patience, reinvention and quiet determination.

The brand he built will continue. The conversations he sparked around a plate of eggs of all things will continue. And the example he set for entrepreneurs across the Gulf region, particularly those from the Indian subcontinent who arrive with a dream and nothing more, will continue for years to come.
