Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and US President Donald Trump held a significant phone call on Thursday, covering the latest political and security developments across the Middle East. The conversation, confirmed by the Qatar News Agency (QNA), comes at a critical moment as the region navigates a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Emir Stresses Diplomacy Over Escalation

During the call, Emir Tamim made Qatar's position clear. He stressed the urgent need to prioritise political and diplomatic solutions and to keep dialogue open among all parties. The Emir emphasised that continued engagement is the only credible path to consolidating regional security and sparing the Middle East from further instability. Both leaders also reviewed ongoing regional and international initiatives specifically aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening long-term stability across the Gulf.

Trump Praises Qatar's Mediation Role

President Trump used the call to formally acknowledge Qatar's growing diplomatic footprint. He voiced strong appreciation for Doha's active support of Pakistan's mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran — a track that has quietly become the backbone of ceasefire negotiations since April 8, 2026. Trump also commended Qatar's broader work in bridging differences between parties and advancing de-escalation pathways across the region. It was a clear signal from Washington that Doha's role is not just welcomed — it is relied upon.

Qatar at the Heart of Iran-US Negotiations

The phone call did not happen in isolation. Just days earlier, a high-level Iranian delegation — including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati — arrived in Doha for talks focused on the Strait of Hormuz blockade, Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, and the potential release of up to $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets. It was the first senior Iranian visit to the region since the conflict began, and it happened on Qatari soil — underscoring Doha's unique position as a trusted channel for both sides.

Qatar-US Strategic Ties Reaffirmed

Beyond the immediate crisis, Thursday's call also touched on the broader Qatar-US relationship. Both leaders discussed opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest. Qatar hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East at Al Udeid, and its alignment with Washington — while maintaining open lines to Tehran — makes it one of the most strategically valuable partners the United States has in the region right now.
