Qatar Welcomes Release of 15 Detainees Under Doha Peace Process for Eastern DR Congo

Qatar has welcomed the release of 15 detainees under the Doha Peace Process for eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, describing the development as an important step toward building trust between the parties and advancing efforts for a peaceful settlement.

The detainees were released by Congolese authorities, while the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated their transfer and handover to the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) on August 6 and 7.

The process was carried out under the mechanism for the release of detained persons signed in Doha in September 2025 as part of the wider Doha Peace Process.

Qatar Highlights Confidence-Building Step

Qatar said the release could help strengthen confidence between the parties and create more favourable conditions for further progress toward sustainable and peaceful solutions in eastern DR Congo.

The country said such steps support broader efforts to restore peace and stability in the region and expressed hope that the development would encourage additional confidence-building measures.

ICRC Role Praised

Qatar also praised the ICRC for its role in implementing the mechanism for the release, safe transfer and handover of detainees in line with humanitarian principles. It also acknowledged the contributions of partners supporting the peace process.

Doha reiterated its commitment to facilitating dialogue between the parties, consistent with Qatar's policy of supporting peaceful conflict resolution and promoting regional security and stability.

Qatar said it hopes continued progress in the peace process will help meet the aspirations of the Congolese people for peace, development and prosperity.
