Qatar, Turkey and Egypt β the three countries mediating between Israel and Hamas β have jointly condemned what they described as Israel's βviolations in the Gaza Strip,β warning that the continued attacks risk undermining the ceasefire that formally remains in place. The statement was issued late on Monday as fresh strikes were reported across the territory.
The mediators' statement
In their joint statement, the three governments said the attacks β particularly those affecting health care and civilians β amounted to breaches of international law. They cautioned that a continuation of such strikes could jeopardise the truce that officially exists between Israel and Hamas, and by extension the broader diplomatic effort the three states have been coordinating. As the principal intermediaries in the conflict, Qatar, Turkey and Egypt have played a central role in brokering and sustaining pauses in the fighting.
Renewed strikes reported
Israeli media reported on Monday night that the military was striking several locations in Gaza, in some cases using combat vehicles. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that a tent encampment in Khan Younis was among the sites hit. According to Hamas-controlled health authorities, eight people were killed on Sunday night when several residential buildings were struck, and a further five people were reported killed later in the day.
The casualty figures are attributed to local authorities in Gaza and cannot be independently verified. Israel, which says its operations in the territory are directed at Hamas militants, had not issued an immediate public response to the mediators' statement in the reporting available at the time of writing.
A fragile ceasefire
The reported strikes come despite a formal ceasefire, and against the backdrop of an apparent diplomatic breakthrough days earlier. On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached providing for the disarmament of Hamas and a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The sequencing and implementation of that arrangement remain unresolved, and the mediators' warning underscores how fragile the current calm is as violence continues on the ground.
This is a developing story. Casualty figures are as reported by local authorities and cannot be independently verified; details may change as more information emerges.
