The Qatar national football team made history on Saturday. Boualem Khoukhi scored a dramatic late goal against Switzerland. This spectacular header secured a 1-1 draw in their World Cup 2026 opener. It gave Qatar its first-ever point at the tournament.

A Dramatic Injury-Time Equalizer

Switzerland dominated the game for nearly 90 minutes. They controlled possession on a warm afternoon in Santa Clara. Qatar refused to give up the fight. Khoukhi found the back of the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Joyful Qatari players dropped to the ground to celebrate. Teammates rushed the field and hugged each other tightly.

Swiss Take Early Penalty Lead

Breel Embolo gave the Swiss team an early lead. He scored from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Embolo inside the box. The referee handed Abunada a yellow card for the foul.

The goalkeeper stayed on the ground for two minutes. He eventually stood up and continued the match safely. Embolo fired his penalty shot into the upper left corner. Red-clad Swiss fans danced wildly in the stadium stands.

Embolo played the match after resolving a stressful visa delay. The United States embassy finally cleared him just last week.

Goalkeepers Shine in Opening Match

Both teams created multiple scoring chances throughout the afternoon. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel blocked an early shot from Edmilson Junior. Kobel also stopped a close-range strike from Ahmed Alaaeldin. He made this crucial save in the 90th minute.

Overcoming Past World Cup Struggles

Coach Julen Lopetegui leads the Qatari national squad this year. His team showed incredible spirit and determination today. Qatar lost all three group matches at the 2022 tournament. This hard-fought draw represents massive progress for the team.

Switzerland hopes to reach the quarterfinals under coach Murat Yakin. They suffered a tough loss to Portugal four years ago.

Fans eagerly await the next Group B matches. We wish our national team the absolute best of luck!
